The Evolution of Curtains

Curtains and blinds haven’t always been used in the way that they are now; they have had many uses over the centuries. One of the very first uses for curtains was to hang over tents in the middle-eastern dessert. Its purpose was not only to provide privacy, but also a very primitive form of air conditioning after wetting them with water to take some of the brutal heat off. It probably wasn’t the best air-conditioning but certainly effective.

It wasn’t unto the 17th century that windows started being made much larger than the very small windows previously made due to expense. During this time, the Victorians made full use of curtains for many different reasons including to help with insulation in their cold homes and to show off to guests. Victorians typically hung three pairs of curtains at their windows; one thick outer pair, a lace-like middle pair and a third thinner pair. The middle pair was the only one to be opened usually.

The evolution of curtains

It was only in the 1940’s that ready-made curtains were being supplied to stores and by the 1950’s curtains were an essential home component, used to match the architectural style of the home. It’s safe to say that curtains have come a very long way since windows were wooden or marble slats, often proving to be very drafty. Today, their main purpose is to provide privacy and for some, to show off artistic taste, and fortune.

Venetians – A ‘Blinding’ Window dressing!

Since the early Venetians, who had a reputation for being great traders, brought the idea of the blind from Persia to Venice the classic elegance of the Venetian blind is something that has never gone out of style. Once freed, those who had been kept as slaves by the Venetians are then thought to have brought the blind to France for personal comfort and as a means of making a living. Cheekily renaming the blind to make it their own, the French name for Venetian blinds is “Les Persienes.”

Window Blinds and Child Safety

Window Blinds and Child Safety

The introduction of tighter safety standards for window blinds will make them safe for young children.

Internal window blind cords and chains pose a risk to babies, small children and vulnerable people who could injure or even strangle themselves on looped operating cords and chains. Your home should be a place where your children are safe and protected, but there is a hidden danger in many homes.

If you already have blinds fitted in your home there are some practical, simple precautions to help reduce the risk to babies and small children,

  • make sure all cords and chains are always secured and out of reachmake it safe
  • do not place your child’s cot, bed, highchair or playpen near to a window blind
  • do not put sofas, chairs, tables, shelves or bookcases near to a window blind as children love to climb
  • Position furniture a safe distance away from windows to prevent children climbing too close to them
  • Use the safety products to secure them out of reach.

Advice on buying new blinds

  • Is the blind manufactured to the new standard?child safety device
  • Is a warning notice attached?
  • Is a safety solution provided and fitted in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions?
  • Can the supplier demonstrate the product’s safe use?
  • Is documentation relating to the blind’s safe installation, use and maintenance provided?

All blinds now comes with a child safety device (CSD), check that this is installed with the new blind, alternatively look for a blind that does not contain cords or chains or has concealed cords.

These tips should help to protect your child from possible serious harm. You should be aware that all risks cannot be eliminated. Parents and others should always keep window blind cords and chains out of the reach of children and follow the safety instructions.
